School Construction: How To Make It Better
|
Preparing for new school facilities involves intense decision-making. Administrators from the school or university have to think about little and big decisions starting from the conception up to the completion of the construction of the school facilities. Whatever decisions they come up with will affect the overall feel of the school with the staff and students recognizing the new school facility as a place more conducive to learning or not. The decisions are essential to constructing the school facility but determining their level of importance is very hard. This is because every school has its own priorities. However, there are several issues that should be dealt with to provide a better school facility. School Definition Every school should be aware of their culture and mission. It is the best way to know what facilities a school may need. If the school is not clear about their culture and mission, it is best that they firmly know it first before delving into any construction of school facilities. Look into the philosophies of the school or their curriculum. It would definitely show that a school with a big spread out campus will have different priorities than a school with a small campus. Space Shared Districts are now building larger classrooms that can hold computers. This space requirement is putting a dent on the budget allotted for the construction of the facilities. The solution being looked into to address this issue is having shared spaces. Shared spaces should be used by the teacher and staff members to keep items and materials that are usually stored in classroom closets. With shared spaces, the teachers will be able to share their curriculum materials as well as clean up the items they have collected for over a period. Sustainable Design Environmental awareness is what the communities and the students are learning these days. A school should have sustainable design in such a way that it can save energy and money but teach the students as well. This should be a part of the students’ learning process. In addition, green building materials or environment-friendly materials should be considered in the construction of the school facility. Surrounding Landscape Usually, administrators of the schools or universities think about their school facilities without paying attention to the outdoor landscape. On college campuses, specifically, the surrounding landscape plays an important role in getting a higher quality of education. This is because most of the college students will hang out in the surrounding landscape whenever they do not have classes. When campuses grew way back in the 60s, the attention was on building parking spaces but the trend now is creating a greener landscape. Space Variety In most schools, there is always a pressing need on classrooms for the traditional lecture. However, the teaching styles have progressed into many different approaches that there is a need for various spaces. These spaces should allow students to work and learn on their own. Student Space College campuses and K-12 schools are focusing on facilities that cater to students. Especially in high schools, the attention is more on common gathering spaces that will make the school facilities more inviting to students. In college campuses, the focus is on school facilities that would invite the students to hang out in the campus rather than to leave. Technology With technology advancements these days, schools should be designed in such a way that it can host audio and video materials that can be easily retrieved by teachers in the classrooms. This also means that with the school being able to provide electronic information, it can render some facilities free. Any equipment limitations regarding the infrastructure of technology will also be lessened since more schools are converting to wireless networks.
